Work Stress Therapy in Richmond, VA
The workday is supposed to end when you close the laptop, but it keeps following you home. You’re at dinner and still replaying the meeting in your head, or you snap at someone over something small and feel bad about it an hour later. The job gets done and everyone thinks you’ve got it handled, but you can’t actually remember the last time your mind felt quiet. If the pressure from work has started leaking into the rest of your life, work stress therapy in Richmond, VA is what we do here.
The kind of stress that doesn’t show up on the outside
This isn’t about hating your job or wanting to quit. Most of the men we see are good at what they do, and that’s part of the problem. You hold yourself to a high standard, you keep saying yes, and the load just keeps growing while you tell yourself you should be able to handle it. Over time that catches up with you.
Our work with chronic overwork sits within our broader stress and burnout therapy for men, where the focus is on building a life that doesn’t run you into the ground.
Who we work with
We work with smart, capable men anywhere from their 20s to their 60s. Most are carrying more than they realize. They’re successful, functioning at a high clip, and quietly worn down by the standard they’ve always held themselves to. Usually the thing that makes them successful also makes them suffer.
What this actually looks like
A lot of the men we talk to describe coming home with nothing left for their family at the end of the day, drained by a job that demands everything. Others can’t shut their brains off at night, running tomorrow’s list on a loop until two in the morning.
Work stress is often driven by the pressure you put on yourself, where no amount of effort ever feels like enough. For some men, that pressure is tangled up with perfectionism, and those high internal standards become part of the work. You notice it in the small stuff too. A shorter fuse. Less patience. The sense that you’re always on and never off.
How the work actually goes
We primarily draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, among other modalities. The idea is to help you gain a little more freedom from your own mind, so the stress stops calling every shot.

From there, the work becomes about getting clear on what you actually want and taking real, concrete steps toward it. You learn to stop organizing your life around avoiding discomfort. The constant mental noise may fade over time, but the bigger shift is in your relationship with it, so your mind works for you instead of running you.
Walk & Talk along the James River
We primarily do Walk & Talk therapy along the James River. Each session consists of about a two-mile walk along the trails. For a lot of guys, talking is easier side by side than across a desk. You’re doing the same clinical work you would in an office with a licensed therapist, just in a setting that tends to feel more natural.
If getting outside isn’t realistic for your schedule, we also offer secure video sessions throughout Virginia. Some men prefer that for the privacy and the shorter day.
Frequency is flexible and led by you. Some men keep sessions every two weeks as a steady place to process life, some taper to once a month as things settle, and some reach back out when they need us. The goal isn’t to keep you in therapy forever. It’s to make our job increasingly unnecessary.
“Walk & Talk Therapy is the only type of therapy that has ever worked for me.”

Common questions
How much does therapy cost, and do you take insurance?
Individual sessions are $275 for 50 minutes, and we are private-pay, so we don’t bill insurance. The 15-minute phone consultation is free. We accept major credit and debit cards, including HSA and FSA, with a card kept on file and charged after each session. We can provide monthly superbills if you want to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement depends on your benefits and isn’t guaranteed.
Do I need a diagnosis or a crisis to come in?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis, a breakdown, or a specific reason you can explain. Most of the men we work with are functioning fine on the outside and simply tired of carrying the pressure alone. If something feels off and you want it to change, that’s reason enough to start.
What actually happens in the first session?
In the first session, we get to know you and your story to understand your challenges and goals. You can expect to leave with at least a few practical tools, not just a stack of questions. After that, men typically meet weekly or every other week, and some taper to once a month as things settle.
Do I have to be outdoorsy to do Walk & Talk?
No. Walk & Talk sessions move at a normal, conversational pace, not an athletic one. You don’t need gear, training, or any particular fitness level. If walking isn’t your thing, secure video sessions throughout Virginia work just as well, and some men prefer them for the privacy.
Starting is the hard part
If you’ve been grinding through this on your own and it isn’t getting any better, it might be time to try something different. Our therapists are licensed professional counselors through the Virginia Board of Counseling, and they’re also regular guys dealing with many of the same pressures you are.
It starts with a free 15-minute call. We’ll get a sense of what’s going on and recommend the therapist we think fits you best. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll tell you. Reach out when you’re ready, and we’ll take it from there.
