Logistics

Where do sessions take place?

Walk-and-talk sessions take place along the James River. Parke meets at Robious Landing, and Daniel and Devin meet at Pony Pasture.

We also offer online therapy throughout Virginia through a secure telehealth platform, as well as phone sessions for clients who prefer that format.

Which therapist will I work with?

Parke handles the initial consultation and helps match you with the therapist who seems like the best fit based on what you’re dealing with, your schedule, and the type of therapy you prefer.

If the fit does not feel right, switching therapists is always an option.

How do I get started?

Schedule a free 15-minute consultation through the website or by phone. We’ll talk briefly about what’s going on, what you want to change, and whether we seem like a good fit.

If we’re not the right fit, we’ll tell you and point you toward another therapist or resource when we can.

What are the logistics of a Walk & Talk session?

You’ll meet your therapist in the parking lot at Robious Landing or Pony Pasture and head out on the trail. Most sessions are about a two-mile walk, and we go at whatever pace works for you.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. If the weather gets in the way, we switch to virtual for that session. Learn more about Walk & Talk Therapy.

Do you offer phone sessions?

Yes. If you prefer a phone session, we’ll call you at the scheduled time. Some guys like to walk around their neighborhood or on local trails while we talk.

Phone sessions are available throughout Virginia as long as you have a private place to talk.

Where are you located and who do you serve?

We’re based in Richmond, Virginia. We serve men in Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, and surrounding areas through Walk & Talk Therapy, and we offer virtual therapy throughout Virginia.

Who is your typical client?

Most of our clients are capable men who ask a lot of themselves and are carrying more than people realize. A lot are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s and are juggling work, relationships, parenting, money, and a lot of responsibility. We also work with college-aged men, guys in their 20s, and men in their 60s and 70s.

Common issues include anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, anger, social anxiety, self-esteem, addictive patterns, communication problems, and relationship stress.

Cost, Insurance, and Policies

What does therapy cost, and do you take insurance?

Sessions are $275 for 50 minutes. We are a private-pay practice and do not accept insurance.

We can provide a monthly superbill for clients who want to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement. Your insurance company determines whether and how much it reimburses. See full pricing and payment details.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and missed appointments are charged the full session fee.

We waive the fee for genuine emergencies such as illness, an accident, or a sick child. Work conflicts and last-minute scheduling issues are still subject to the policy because that time was reserved specifically for you.

The Therapy Itself

How does the first session work?

We review your intake paperwork and consultation notes beforehand, so we are not starting from scratch. The first session is about understanding what’s going on, what brought you in now, and what you want to be different.

You do not need to show up knowing exactly what to say. We’ll help get the conversation started. Learn more about how it works.

What happens between sessions?

A lot of the work happens outside the session. That might mean trying a tool, noticing a pattern, having a conversation you’ve been avoiding, or responding differently in a situation that usually gets you stuck.

The point is for therapy to show up in your actual life.

How often will we meet?

All of our clients start by meeting weekly or every other week. Consistency matters, especially in the beginning.

If you cannot commit to meeting regularly at first, we usually recommend waiting until you can.

How long will I be in therapy?

There is no set timeline. Some guys come in with something specific they want to work through. Others have been dealing with the same patterns for years.

Our goal is not to keep you in therapy forever. Stay in therapy while it is useful. When it has done its job, you can step away and come back later if you need it.

What approach do you use?

Our primary approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT. ACT helps you get better at handling difficult thoughts and feelings, get clearer about what matters to you, and take action in that direction.

Depending on the therapist and what you’re working on, we also use CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing.

How is this different from traditional talk therapy?

Talking matters, but we also focus on what you can actually do differently outside the session.

We want you to be able to point to specific changes in your life, not just say you had good conversations in therapy.

What issues do you work with most?

We commonly work with anxiety, stress and burnout, depression, anger, social anxiety, low self-esteem, people pleasing, addictive patterns, communication problems, and relationship stress.

We work with individuals, so the focus is always on your side of the street and what you can control.

How will I know if therapy is working?

You should be able to point to changes in your actual life. Maybe you are reacting differently, avoiding less, communicating more directly, making clearer decisions, or handling situations that used to knock you off course.

That is the kind of progress we are looking for.

Is there anything you don’t treat?

Yes. We may refer out when someone needs a different level or type of care, including active suicidal crisis, eating disorders, substance dependence requiring a higher level of care, psychosis, or trauma that needs specialized treatment.

If we are not the right fit, we’ll tell you.

What if I need medication?

We do not prescribe medication. If medication may be helpful, we can refer you to psychiatric providers in Richmond or elsewhere in Virginia.

Some clients use therapy alone. Others benefit from therapy and medication together.

What if I’m nervous about starting?

That’s common. You do not need to know exactly what to say or how the conversation is supposed to go. We’ll help get it started.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, with a few legal and ethical exceptions. Those generally include risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or certain court orders.

For minors, confidentiality works a little differently, and we’ll explain that clearly at the beginning.

Do you work with couples?

No. We work with individuals. Relationship issues come up all the time, but the work stays focused on what you can do differently.

If couples therapy is the better fit, we can point you toward trusted couples therapists in Richmond.
