Therapy for Perfectionism in Richmond, VA
The report goes out and your boss says it looks great. You’re already running the list of things you’d fix if you had one more day with it. The satisfaction lasts about a minute before your brain moves to what you should have done better. You can’t shake the feeling that you should be doing more, and that you should be doing it better. If that sounds like you, this is therapy for perfectionism in Richmond, VA, built for men who hold themselves to a standard nothing ever quite meets.
Who we work with
We work with smart, capable men anywhere from their 20s to their 60s. Most are carrying more than they realize. They’re successful, functioning at a high clip, and quietly worn down by the standards they’ve always held themselves to. Usually the thing that makes them successful also makes them suffer.
What this tends to look like
The drive that got you here has a cost, and you feel it in ways other people don’t see. You redo work that was already fine. You put off things until you can do them perfectly, so some of them never start. You read too much into what people think, and you replay small mistakes for days.
You notice you have a shorter fuse than you used to. You snap at the people closest to you over things that don’t deserve it, then feel bad about it later. If you constantly raise the bar and still feel like you’ve never done enough, that pattern is worth looking at closely.
Perfectionism rarely shows up on its own, and for many men it feeds directly into the kind of chronic pressure we address in our stress and burnout therapy for men. It helps to understand the link between perfectionism and overworking and how they reinforce each other over time.
How the work actually goes
We primarily draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, motivational interviewing, and other approaches. The goal is to help you gain a little more freedom from your own mind.

From there, the work becomes about getting clear on what you actually want and taking real, concrete steps toward it. In that process, you learn to stop organizing your life around getting everything right. The pressure to be perfect may ease over time, but the more important piece is developing a different relationship with it, so your mind works for you instead of running the show.
This isn’t about lowering your standards or settling. It’s about finding a better balance, so the drive still serves you without quietly wearing you down.
Where sessions happen
We primarily do Walk & Talk therapy along the James River. Each session consists of about a two-mile walk along the trails. For a lot of guys, talking is easier side by side than across a desk.
You’re doing the same clinical work you would in an office with a licensed therapist, in a setting that tends to feel more natural for men. If walking isn’t your thing, secure video sessions are available throughout Virginia, and some men prefer them for the privacy and the shorter day. As one client put it, “Walk & Talk Therapy is the only type of therapy that has ever worked for me.”
Common questions
How much does therapy cost, and do you take insurance?
Individual sessions are $275 for 50 minutes, and we are private-pay, so we don’t bill insurance. The 15-minute phone consultation is free. We accept major credit and debit cards, including HSA and FSA, with a card kept on file and charged after each session. We can provide monthly superbills if you want to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement depends on your benefits and isn’t guaranteed.
Do I need a diagnosis or a crisis to come in?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis, a breakdown, or a specific reason you can explain. Most of the men we work with are functioning fine on the outside and simply tired of carrying the pressure alone. If something feels off and you want it to change, that’s reason enough to start.
What actually happens in the first session?
In the first session, we get to know you and your story to understand your challenges and goals. You can expect to leave with at least a few practical tools, not just a stack of questions. After that, men typically meet weekly or every other week, and some taper to once a month as things settle.
Do I have to be outdoorsy to do Walk & Talk?
No. Walk & Talk sessions move at a normal, conversational pace, not an athletic one. You don’t need gear, training, or any particular fitness level. If walking isn’t your thing, secure video sessions throughout Virginia are also available, and some men prefer them for the privacy.
Getting started
Our therapists are licensed professional counselors through the Virginia Board of Counseling, and they’re also regular guys dealing with many of the same pressures you are. We keep caseloads smaller because we do better work with fewer people. The point isn’t to keep you in therapy forever. It’s to make our job increasingly unnecessary.
If you’ve been grinding through this on your own and it isn’t getting any better, it might be time to try something different. We start with a free 15-minute consultation to make sure we’re a good fit for each other. When you’re ready to talk with someone, you can reach out to our Richmond practice to ask questions or book a first session.
