High-Functioning Anxiety Therapy in Richmond, VA
From the outside, you’re handling it. The work gets done on time, your family is taken care of, and nobody who sees you day to day would guess how wound up you feel underneath it. Inside, there’s a hum that never fully shuts off, a sense that you have to stay on top of everything or it might slip. If that sounds familiar, this is high-functioning anxiety therapy in Richmond, VA, built for men who look steady on the outside and feel anything but on the inside.
Who we work with
We work with smart, capable men anywhere from their 20s to their 60s. Most are carrying more than they realize. They’re successful, functioning at a high clip, and quietly worn down by the standards they’ve always held themselves to. Usually, the very thing that makes them successful also makes them suffer.
What this actually feels like
A common sign of high-functioning anxiety is not being able to shut your brain off even when everything is fine on paper. The day ends and the worry doesn’t. You lie down and your mind keeps scanning for the next thing that needs handling.
If you find yourself constantly expecting something to go wrong, that low-grade dread can quietly shape how you work, sleep, and connect with others. You stay ready for a problem that usually never comes, and staying ready is exhausting.
A lot of the men we see tell us they can’t relax, that they’re tired all the time, or that they have a shorter fuse than they used to. The pressure doesn’t always look like panic. It often looks like being irritable with the people you love and not knowing why.
It helps to understand how success can hide constant worry, because outward achievement often masks the strain underneath. People assume you’re fine because the results say so. You start to assume it too, right up until you notice you’re not really enjoying any of it.
How the work actually goes
We primarily draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, motivational interviewing, and other approaches. We use what fits the man in front of us, not a script.
The goal isn’t to scrub out every anxious thought. It’s to help you gain a little more freedom from your mind, get clear on what you actually want, and take real steps toward it. Along the way, you learn to stop organizing your life around avoiding discomfort. The constant worry may ease over time, but the bigger shift is developing a different relationship with it, so your mind works for you instead of running the show.
Where we meet
We primarily do Walk & Talk therapy along the James River. Each session consists of about a two-mile walk along the trails. For a lot of guys, talking is easier side by side than across a desk.

You’re doing the same clinical work you would in an office with a licensed therapist. If walking isn’t your thing, secure video sessions are available throughout Virginia, and some men prefer them for the privacy and the shorter day.
What changes
Nobody here is going to promise you a life without worry. What we can work toward is a better balance, where the drive that made you successful stops costing you your sleep, your patience, and your time with the people who matter. One client, a sales executive, told us that Walk & Talk was the only kind of therapy that ever worked for him. The aim is a life that runs on what you value, not on staying one step ahead of the next thing you dread.
Common questions
How much does therapy cost, and do you take insurance?
Individual sessions are $275 for 50 minutes, and we are private-pay, so we don’t bill insurance. The 15-minute phone consultation is free. We accept major credit and debit cards, including HSA and FSA, with a card kept on file and charged after each session. We can provide monthly superbills if you want to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement depends on your benefits and isn’t guaranteed.
Do I need a diagnosis or a crisis to come in?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis, a breakdown, or a specific reason you can explain. Most of the men we work with are functioning fine on the outside and simply tired of carrying the pressure alone. If something feels off and you want it to change, that’s reason enough to start.
What actually happens in the first session?
In the first session, we get to know you and your story to understand your challenges and goals. You can expect to leave with at least a few practical tools, not just a stack of questions. After that, men typically meet weekly or every other week, and some taper to once a month as things settle.
Do I have to be outdoorsy to do Walk & Talk?
No. Walk & Talk sessions move at a normal, conversational pace, not an athletic one. You don’t need gear, training, or any particular fitness level. If walking isn’t your thing, secure video sessions throughout Virginia are also available, and some men prefer them for the privacy and convenience.
Starting is the hard part
If you’ve been grinding through this on your own and it isn’t getting any better, it might be time to try something different. We’re not here to keep anyone in therapy forever; the work is meant to make our job increasingly unnecessary.
It starts with a free 15-minute call. We’ll get a sense of what’s going on and recommend the therapist we think fits you best. Reach out when you’re ready, and we’ll take it from there.
