I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore

For men, depression doesn’t always look like sadness. It can show up as irritability, a short fuse, frustration, restlessness, or shutting down. You get quieter. You pull back. You stop enjoying the things that used to help you feel like you. Work becomes heavier. Home becomes harder. Joy feels out of reach.

You wake up tired. You go through the motions. You feel disconnected from the people who matter. And maybe you’ve been telling yourself you just need a break, more sleep, another weekend to reset. But the feeling doesn’t go away.

A lot of the men we work with have been walking around for years in a state of low-level depression without realizing it. It’s like an AC unit humming in the background. You get used to it and stop noticing it until it shuts off. A buddy told me recently, “God, I didn’t realize I’d been depressed for like 10 years until just recently when it lifted.”

If this sounds familiar, it may be depression.

How Depression Shows Up in Men

Depression in men often gets missed because it hides in behaviors people mistake for stress or burnout.

  • Irritability and anger that feel out of character
  • Feeling numb, disconnected, or checked out
  • Sadness, hopelessness, and lack of joy
  • Extreme fatigue, even after a full night of sleep
  • Losing interest in hobbies, exercise, or anything fun
  • Being physically present but mentally somewhere else
  • Feeling like you are dragging yourself through the day
  • Finding it harder to focus, decide, or follow through
  • Feeling guilty, hopeless, or like you are letting people down

None of this means you are weak or failing. It means you are overwhelmed.

Depression Therapy for Men Can Help

This is not about fixing you. The work is figuring out what’s keeping you stuck and what needs to change. In therapy, we will:

  • Sort out what is weighing you down
  • Notice the patterns that keep you stuck
  • Build habits that help you feel grounded
  • Strengthen the parts of your life that give you energy
  • Learn how to relate to difficult thoughts and feelings without getting pulled under
  • Start doing more of the things that help you function and feel better

You do not need to go back to some old version of yourself. You need to feel like yourself. There is a difference.

Common Questions

How do I know if it’s depression or just a rough patch?

Rough patches move through. Depression sticks around and affects your energy, motivation, patience, relationships, and sense of meaning. For men it can look like feeling flat, checked out, irritated, or going through the motions. If you haven’t felt like yourself for a while, it’s worth taking seriously.

I’m not sad, just angry, tired, and disconnected. Is that still depression?

It can be. Depression in men often shows up as irritability, fatigue, low motivation, and a shorter fuse. A lot of men miss it because they’re still functioning, working, parenting, showing up, while inside, the color has gone out of life.

What therapy approach do you use for depression?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, to reconnect with what matters and take useful steps even when motivation is low. We don’t wait for you to feel better before acting. Often action comes first and mood follows. We also use CBT, behavioral activation, mindfulness, and self-compassion work as needed.

How long does depression therapy take?

No standard number of sessions. Some men come in for focused support during a difficult stretch; others work longer-term on persistent patterns. Progress looks like more energy, better follow-through, less isolation, and renewed interest in things that used to matter.

Do I need medication?

Maybe, maybe not. We don’t prescribe, but we regularly refer to psychiatric providers in Richmond and across Virginia when medication seems worth considering. Some men do well with therapy alone; others benefit from combining both.
